55th Grammy Awards: the performers

This year's Grammys ceremony is bringing lots of great artists to the stage, not only to receive awards but also to perform. And that's a big part of the show.

The Black Keys are nominated in five categories with El Camino. Before winning any of those prizes, they will be performing with Dr. John in a tribute to the late jazz icon Dave Brubeck.

In the list of the most nominated artists, Kelly Clarkson is also going to present something from the album Stronger live at the 55th Grammys. Fun and Mumford & Sons, both up for Best New Artist, are going to play something as well.

Ed Sheeran has received an invitation to return to the Grammy's stage after last year's performances and this time he's not alone. Sheeran will be singing a duet with Sir Elton John.

In what concerns stage collaborations, Bruno Mars will be joined by Sting and Rihanna (what?!), Maroon 5 are playing with Alicia Keys, and as a tribute to Levon Helm (The Band) Mumford & Sons will go on with Zack Brown, Elton John and T Bone Burnett.

Mumford & Sons, who are up for six awards, are also playing solo, just like Frank Ocean, Fun, The Lumineers and Jack White. Justin Timberlake is expected to bring his latest news.

A cerimónia dos Grammys deste ano traz actuações de qualidade de muitos artistas nomeados.

Os The Black Keys têm o nome em seis categorias principais. O dueto americano convida Dr. John para um tributo ao ícone do jazz, Dave Brubeck.

A Kelly Clarkson marca a presença feminina da noite. A cantora do American Idol recebeu várias nomeações, como também os Mumford & Sons e os Fun. Frank Ocean, The Lumineers e Jack White juntam-se à lista das actuações dos 55º Prémios Grammy. Justin Timberlake deverá levar o seu material novo de que anda meio mundo a falar. 

No campo das colaborações, há Ed Sheeran com Elton John, que se junta mais tarde aos Mumford &Sons, Zack Brown e T Bone Burnett para prestar homenagem a Levon Helm (The Band). Bruno Mars actuará com Rihanna e Sting, numa combinação algo estranha. Maroon 5 e Alicia Keys também se juntam para os Grammys.

The 55th Grammy Awards are almost here

They call it music's biggest night. It's definitely an exciting event and this year, with three new categories, 81 golden gramophones are being awarded next Sunday, February 10th.

Estas são *as apostas do Urban Blues para algumas das categorias dos Grammys. Acontece já no próximo Domingo, 10 de Fevereiro, a entrega dos 81 gramofones mais emblemáticos do mundo da música.

Do público para o palco, quem manda agora é Capitão Fausto

No espaço de um ano, lançaram um álbum de originais, saíram do anonimato da cave e tocaram nas duas edições do Vodafone Mexefest. Estão prestes a dar mais um passo no sentido contrário ao do anonimato – a 5 de Julho, saltam do público para o palco principal do Super Bock Super Rock, ao lado de Hot Chip e Bloc Party. É oficial: agora quem manda é Capitão Fausto.

Nem a chuva nem o mau resultado do Portugal-Alemanha desanimaram a noite dos Capitão Fausto em Oeiras. Estes amigos de liceu juntaram-se há quase 3 anos de forma muito natural e com o propósito simples de fazer música. Misturaram os seus gostos musicais (que vão de Beatles a Arctic Monkeys, de The Doors a Jack White) e deram origem à banda que anda a surpreender e a conquistar os públicos a quem se apresenta.

O concerto nas Festas de Oeiras foi um dos primeiros de uma agenda de Verão cheia (que inclui passagens por palcos como o Lux, o Ritz Club, o São Jorge e o Festival Bons Sons). Foi também um ensaio para a apresentação no SBSR, concerto que vai ser uma prova de fogo importante no breve percurso da banda. Há surpresas, mas ainda não as revelam. Ainda assim, asseguram que cada espectáculo é diferente.

Fugir à repetição é missão que os Capitão Fausto levam para o palco. É também fórmula vencedora, que lhes valeu críticas positivas e algum reconhecimento depois dos concertos em Lisboa e no Porto no Vodafone Mexefest. “A partir daí começámos a ver caras novas e pessoas a cantarem as músicas que não os nossos amigos”, recorda Domingos Coimbra (baixo). “Os dois concertos correram bem e ajudaram-nos a evoluir um bocadinho”, acrescenta Tomás Wallenstein (voz e guitarra). “Os concertos estão a ficar cada vez mais interessantes, pelo menos para nós, de tocar”, assegura

Se o SBSR for como o concerto de Sábado em Oeiras, o destaque vai para a música tocada ao vivo. Se há traço marcante dos Capitão Fausto é a capacidade de conjugar em palco tantos instrumentos de forma harmoniosa. Ao baixo de Domingos e à guitarra de Tomás juntam-se a guitarra de Manuel Palha, a bateria de Salvador Seabra e as teclas de Francisco Ferreira.

Com tudo isto a acontecer em palco, é apenas natural que o público entre no ritmo e na dança das músicas já muito conhecidas. “Não descreveria os concertos como muito descolados do disco, com a diferença de que é um som muito mais alto e estão lá umas pessoas aos saltos”, diz o vocalista. E estiveram mesmo. Quase no fim do concerto algumas vozes pediam ‘Teresa’, o primeiro single do álbum de estreia, Gazela.

Porquê Gazela? O momento de dar nome ao álbum coincidiu com uma fase inspirada de desenhos de animais cerrados ao meio pelo estudante de design, Francisco Ferreira. Também o alinhamento do álbum está dividido entre as primeiras músicas feitas pela banda e as que foram compostas já com a intenção de integrar o primeiro trabalho, afilhado da editora Chifre.

Já pensam no sucessor de Gazela e têm muito material novo, usando os ensaios como momentos de composição. Essa é uma das razões pelas quais vamos ouvir falar muito dos Capitão Fausto nos próximos tempos.

Sem pressa mas com confiança, esta banda de Lisboa vai-se instalando entre os nomes da nova música portuguesa, sem precisar de forçar o seu espaço. São únicos, com um som muito instrumental, singles que ficam instantaneamente no ouvido e um toque retro muito britânico.

Oh Captain, my Captain

In only a year they have released an album and played both in Lisbon and Porto at Vodafone Mexefest. On July 5th they will take a step further into the spotlight by going up on the main stage of one of the most recognised festivals in Portugal, Super Bock Super Rock, right next to bands like Hot Chip and Bloc Party. Capitão Fausto (Captain Fausto, if you will) are here to stay.

They were friends from high school and, 3 years ago, decided to get together with the plain goal of playing music. By mixing their taste in music (which goes from The Beatles to Arctic Monkeys and from The Doors to Jack White), Capitão Fausto were born and started winning the crowds they play to.

Urban Blues talked to the band just before their concert in Oeiras, Cascais, on Saturday, which was the first show of many they will be playing in the summer, both in small but important stages and in big festivals like Super Bock Super Rock. This will be an important milestone on the band’s brief history. Though they don’t reveal the surprises they’re thinking of for the show, lead singer Tomás Wallenstein assures every concert is different.

That’s what they did at Vodafone Mexefest, in Lisbon and Porto, and that’s one of the things that earned them quite positive critics. Also, since then, they started seeing unknown fans (this is, not the usual familiar audience) at the shows, singing the songs.

If the show at Super Bock Super Rock is anything like the one they did in Oeiras, people can expect good music played live. In fact, Capitão Fausto are nothing if not a great live band that can bring together in a balanced way all the instruments they have on stage. There are the two guitars by Tomás Wallenstein and Manuel Palha, the bass guitar by Domingos Coimbra, the drums by Salvador Seabra and the keyboard by Francisco Ferreira.

So, lots of different sounds coming together quite perfectly and making people dance, like the crowd in Oeiras did. Despite the rain and the sad results at the soccer match between Portugal and Germany for the European competition, the crowd was pretty cheerful and even asked for the songs they knew better such as ‘Teresa’, the first single of the debut album, Gazela.

The album cover features a gazelle, designed by Francisco Ferreira. One thing: the gazelle is cut open in half, just like the album is divided in two parts – songs they did in the beginning of their inspired time as a band and songs made specially to be in the album.

They’re just getting started but Capitão Fausto already think about the next album, for which they have lots of new material. We can surely expect to see this name everywhere in the times coming.

They are in no hurry. They move slowly but firmly while conquering their own spot in the sunlight of the Portuguese music scene. It’s a rightful place. Their instrumental sound, catchy singles and retro British vibe make them unique.
