The Rapture a meio gás

Friendly Fires on fire!

A badass attitude de M.I.A.

Day 2, Super Bock Super Rock fest. The day had probably the most pop or mainstream line-up of the festival, with such names as Lana Del Rey and M.I.A. In the end of the night, Friendly Fires were, for me, a surprise and the best ones on stage.

Lana Del Rey's show had the larger turnout of the three days (even more people than Peter Gabriel had), with many fans going there just to watch her peformance. A pitty, since the festival had much more to offer, like the bands at the second stage, Palco EDP.

Supernada, that was it
Manel Cruz is a Portuguese singer/songwriter that many admire. He's the soul of the many projects he jumps into, since the cult band Ornatos Violeta in the 1990s. Though he is still amazing, the lead singer failed to present enough energy to open the main stage for the day.

The Rapture and their so-so performance
The NY based band presented good music, with great musicians playing good live songs. But that was it. Little energy from the band and from the crowd ended up making a flat show, just after The Rapture's performance at Optimus Primavera Sound a few weeks ago.

Hanni El Kathib is the winner
'Come Alive' has been playing on the radio and, the first time I heard it, it sounded like a The Black Keys' song. The singer/songwriter caught my attention as soon as he got on stage with his deep and smooth voice and rock style. He is a great guitar player, which helped make this show one of the best of the night, only many people didn't talk about it.

Lana Del Rey, the saint talks to the people
I didn't catch her whole performance, but from whatI heard it was pretty short. Right at the begginingetty short. Right at the beggining, Lana comes down the stage to talk to the fans, to great them, to give away kisses and hugs and to take gifts. Something like  10 or 15 minutes of Lana Del Rey mixing with the crowd and it was enough for the singer (yes, she does sing) to say she couldn't wait to come back. Her band is good but the songs all sound the same. Despite that, it was the show that thhe most people watched, even more the for Peter Gabriel.

Oh Land better than Lana
In between two songs of Oh Land, someone in the crowd screamed that she was better than Lana Del Rey. That was the general feeling among the ones that gave up on watching the new indie/pop princess to go to the secondary stage. With good songs and a genuine kindness, the singer that goes by the name Oh Land enchanted the EDP stage.

Friendly Fires on fire!
The British band has two records but nothing that compares to their live shows. That's where they really shine and where their disco inspired songs come alive much due to the lead singer's energy. Ed Macfarlane simply does not stop dancing. He grabbed thee crowd screaming "Lisbon, don't be shy!". And we can almost imagine him adding "because I'm not!". It reminded me of Ricky Wilson, though their vibe is quite different from Kaiser Chiefs'. They prepared the stage for M.I.A.

M.I.A.'s badass attitude
She was one the names that convinced many people to go to the festival, after she became more mainstream due to her collaboration with Madonna. She overcame the electronic stage by making everybody - and I mean everybody - move. The first part of the show was somehow weird, with a DJ set that many people assumed to be M.I.A. herself. In the end, her badass attitude combined with the lights and noise turned out good.

New in: Lana Del Rey's video for 'Carmen'

Miss Del Rey continues on her way to the tops (leaving behind her Saturday Night Live criticised performance) and adds a new item to her collection of hispter videos this week.

The song is 'Carmen', her new single, and once more Lana goes back to old looking footage put together with glimpses of herself. Here it is. Like it or that's enough of vintage videos for Lana?

Listening to Lana Del Rey

She is this the one that everybody is talking about. Whether they like her or not, Lana Del Rey is definitely this year's revelation and her album Born to Die will be playing for a long time.

With her unique voice she falls in between pop and indie, somewhere among Lykke Li, Florence Welch, Rihanna (of the early years) with a touch of Amy Winehouse. Pop because of her sexy looks and image; indie because of her melancholic and heartfelt voice and songs. She describes herself as a gangsta Nancy Sinatra, which I think is a high compliment but it suits her well.
