O único dia sem presença portuguesa nos palcos Super Bock e EDP acabou por levar ao Meco 25 mil pessoas. Muitos estrangeiros, muitos fãs mais adultos para ver apenas Peter Gabriel, não encheram mas deixaram o recinto mais composto do que nos dias anteriores. Skrillex tratou de chamar o público mais jovem e, pelo meio, os mais alternativos assistiram à estreia dos The Shins em Portugal e ao regresso de St. Vincent, que acabou por fazer um dos concertos mais falados do festival.
Perfume Genius: suave, suave
Embalou o público que, a surpreender, estava em frente ao Palco EDP de propósito para o projecto de Mike Hadreas. Melodias bonitas, letras bonitas, espectáculo bonito - tinha boa intenção mas não resultou da melhor forma (o que conta é mesmo a intenção). As canções dengosas de Perfume Genius, acompanhas por dois pianos e uma bateria, funcionariam melhor num Coliseu ou noutra sala acolhedora (e esperamos ouvi-las aí em breve). Perderam-se nos ecos do SBSR e num fim de tarde a começar vagaroso e podia ter havido mais interacção com público para compensar o ritmo lento do concerto. Lá para o meio da noite, explicámos-lhes a razão de haver tão pouca gente na assistência e, perdoando, ficaram com curiosidade num regresso com mais impacto. Apesar disso, as músicas mostraram-se muito boas.
Aloe Blacc e a sua família soul
Fez esperar até ao fim quem estava ia só para ouvir o hit 'I need a dollar'. Não se sentiu a falta desta música. Pareceu até um pouco deslocada do alinhamento quando encerrou a actuação animada de Aloe Blacc ao acrescentar um tom pop aos ritmos soul que marcaram o segundo concerto do Palco Super Bock. Do soul ao hip hop, com jazz e algum groove à mistura, Aloe Blacc lembrou em vários momentos Stevie Wonder e fez-nos acreditar que é parente de Janelle Monáe. A banda que trouxe consigo acompanhou o músico americano de forma muito competente e deu-lhe o enquadramento para fazer crescer as canções. Estas, não sendo conhecidas de todo o público, puseram-no a dançar e encheram o recinto onde faltou audiência.
Little Dragon, do Japão e da Suécia para o Meco
Os suecos Little Dragon estavam a dar um espectáculo tão animado que as condições cederam e o Palco EDP ficou sem energia. A música electrónica regressou pouco depois. A vocalista de origem nipónica, Yukimi Nagano, definiu o tom para o resto da noite nesta ala - espectáculos fortes no feminino.
The New Blood Orchestra & Peter Gabriel
O veterano da noite fez-se acompanhar por uma portentosa e talentosa orquestra e os 50 músicos da The New Blood Orchestra cumpriram com distinção o seu papel. Deram dimensão ao espectáculo de Peter Gabriel, composto por animações visuais trabalhadas, em forma de vídeos e ilustrações projectados no palco. Embora seja preciso concordar com muitas opiniões que frisaram não ser este o ambiente ideal para um espectáculo com orquestra, a alternativa - um Peter Gabriel sozinho, acompanhado apenas pelo peso dos anos de Genesis e a solo que já leva - teria desiludido. Havia muita gente só para o ver - gente que abandonou o recinto logo a seguir à actuação mais promissora da noite - e, em especial, muitos estrangeiros. Ficam as tentativas de Peter Gabriel em explicar as músicas em português (ou seria mirandês com galego?), o que é sempre um crowd-pleaser, e a subida ao palco de Regina Spektor como convidada. 'Solsbury Hill' foi um dos pontos altos, mais concentrados na parte final do espectáculo.
St. Vincent, grande maluca
De seu ar doce e frágil, St. Vincent engana muito bem até pegar na guitarra e subir a palco. Já conhece bem o público português e trouxe-lhe as músicas do último álbum, com algumas mais antigas, e acordes rasgados de guitarrista experiente. Aventurou-se no crowd surfing (e consta que até caiu) a provar que talvez ficasse bem no palco principal do SBSR.
The Shins em estreia fraca
Foi uma pena ver tão vazio o concerto dos The Shins. Apesar de alguns fãs dedicados que vibraram nas primeiras filas, cai por terra a fama de acolhedor que ao público português tantos artistas reconhecem. E o concerto até foi bom, começando num punk rock dos primórdios da banda e caminhando, música a música, para o indie que marca o último álbum, Port of Morrow. 'Simple Song' fica bem ao vivo e os The Shins parecem sentir-se bem nesta vertente mais calma, um som que resulta das mudanças feitas na banda. Foi bem visível a desilusão da banda perante uma reacção da fraca do público.
Mais de 65 mil pessoas passaram pelo Meco durante os 3 dias do Super Bock Super Rock, mas a organização merecia mais. Muito positiva foi a melhoria das condições do recinto e, mais ainda, o esforço da organização para absorver o aumento do IVA no preço dos bilhetes. O cartaz esteve muito bom, embora com nomes menos apelativos do que na edição anterior.
Quem lá esteve, gostou do ambiente de festival alternativo meio vazio e de conseguir ver todos os concertos sem grandes multidões - satisfação que, longe de compensar a fraca adesão do público - deixa boas recordações da 18ª edição do Super Bock Super Rock.

On the last day of Super Bock Super Rock no Portuguese bands came up on the main stages of the fest. 25 thousand people went to Meco to see Peter Gabriel, among others. Many foreigners were at the venue, many older people. Skrillex took care of the younger folks at the end of the night, not until St. Vincent amazed the crowds. The Shins performed in Portugal for the first time, but let the fans down as much as the weak turn up failed to impress the band.
Perfume Genius and his smooth style
Mike Hadreas presented his project to not many people at the secondary stage of the fest. A show of slow but beautiful songs didn't drag many people to watch the performance. We would much rather watch Perfume Genius at a small and cosy venue. The songs got lost in the fest atmosphere and into the promising night.
Aloe Blacc has a soulful family
Only at the very last moment of his show, Aloe Blacc had the band blast out his hit 'I need a dollar'. But it wasn't missed in a set list full of good songs with danceable beats. From soul to hip hop, the American musician brought everything to the main stage of the fest, including some jazz and a lot of groove. He reminded the crowd of Stevie Wonder and sounded a lot like a Janelle Monáe's cousin. The band made the artist's music be heard all over the venue.
Little Dragon, Japan and Sweden at Meco
The Swedish electronic band Little Dragon brought the house down. Literally. Suddenly after the first songs the power went down at the EDP stage. Problem solved and the Japanese descendant lead singer set the tone for the rest of the night, a feminine strong night.
The New Blood Orchestra & Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel borught with him The Neew Blood Orchestra and that was probably the best part of the show. The Genesis' veteran wouldn't have given such a good show without the band's support and the visual effects prepared for that kind of performance. Yes, such an entourage would have been better at a closed venue instead of a festival. But, contrary to many opinions, I think they gave another dimension to the show. Many foreigners were there just to see the legend and then left after his show. Peter Gabriel made a real effort to explain the songs in Portuguese, though many words were impossible to understand, but that's always a crowd-pleaser. One of the high points of the evening came with 'Solsbury Hill', another one came right at the begining with Regina Spektor coming up to sing with the ex-Genesis.
Rock on St. Vincent
She looks sweet and fragile until she picks up the guitar. Then St. Vincent (or Annie Clark) transforms into a crazy rock star. She even crowd surfed. Not her first gig in Portugal and we sure hope not the last one in the following months, maybe in a larger stage...
The Shins didn't shine
Their first time in Portugal was not the best one. The set list made the crowd time travel from their punk years and right back to Port of Morrow, their latest album. 'Simple Song' is an example of this new era in The Shins history, a more indie rock sound. The crowd didn't gave The Shins the best of the reactions, like the sure know out to do.
Over 65 thousand people passed by Meco in the 3 days of Super Bock Super Rock, but the event deserved more than that. The organisation made some upgrades in the venue and even maintained the prices of the tickets after the Government raised VAT on this sector. The fest had great bands playing, though they weren't as strong as last year.
People who went there said they loved it. Not many people gives everybody the chance to be at ease, just enjoying the music - good memories of the 18th Super Bock Super Rock for the ones who will, surely, return next year.
