O cartaz prometia, o recinto também. No final do primeiro dia do 18º Super Bock Super Rock os melhores concertos não foram dos cabeças de cartaz e o recinto, coberto de relva, ficou longe de encher. Grandes expectativas tiveram um pontapé de saída morno, com Alabama Shakes a dar o concerto da noite.
Fica um arranque fraco em termos de público (18 mil pessoas, contou a organização), o que acabaria por dar o tom ao festival. Ficam alguns concertos que desiludiram, outros que surpreenderam, e as difíceis escolhas de optar por bandas sobrepostas no horário. Fica, sobretudo, uma reunião de espírito menos indie do que no ano passado, cheia de gente jovem com ar de Sudoeste para os lados do Meco. Hot Chip actuaram demasiado tarde para primeiro dia e, em especial, para uma quinta-feira, impossibilitando o público de ver tudo o que o bilhete comprou. Por aqui, fica o destaque de alguns concertos.
Salto (de gigante)
É preciso começar por dizer que os Salto saíram do anonimato há muito pouco tempo. Tiveram também pouco tempo para preparar o concerto no SBSR, uma vez que substituíram Pete Doherty à última hora. Posto isto, este duo do Porto esteve à altura do palco principal, dando um concerto muito próprio com o curto repertório que têm. O público, também ele reduzido, não aderiu como fará, certamente, daqui a alguns meses, altura em que conhecerão a sério o álbum que os Salto lançaram a 2 de Julho.
The Happy Mess, uma surpresa feliz
Banda portuguesa com ar de veterana, os The Happy Mess agradaram. Primeiro, pela surpresa de terem como frontman o jornalista da SIC Notícias, Miguel Ribeiro, que se apresentou numa faceta até agora desconhecida. Segundo, pela sonoridade rock com toque de old school que cativou os espectadores.
Os instrumentais dos Capitão Fausto
Têm os meses de trabalho e experiência que faltaram aos Salto. Num espectáculo cheio de música - os Capitão Fausto não actuam de outra maneira - conseguiram fazer o arranque que o SBSR merecia e pôr o pessoal a dançar com os singles mais rodados. Mas só na primeira parte, porque o pouco público que ali parava migrou para a outra ponta do recinto ao fim de meia hora, para ver Alabama Shakes. Numa segunda parte, houve muita música instrumental que fica melhor num concerto em nome próprio do que num festival.
From Alabama with love
Os Alabama Shakes fizeram do Palco EDP o centro do primeiro dia do festival. A banda de Alabama reuniu um dos maiores públicos daquele palco, em nada secundário. Brittany Howard é a vocalista que dá soul e presença às músicas do grupo, a atirar para o rock. Apresentaram o primeiro álbum, Boys & Girls, fizeram uma grande estreia em Portugal, converteram os que não os conheciam e agradaram aos que foram ao Meco com intenção de os ver. Foram um dos maiores sucessos do SBSR deste ano e cheira-me que hão-de voltar em breve.
Bloc Party sem festa
Pena de não ter visto os Bloc Party nos tempos de 'Banquet'. O público sentiu o mesmo, a julgar pela reacção aos primeiros acordes deste hit da banda de Kele Okereke. Foi a partir daqui que o concerto dos britânicos começou a aquecer, apesar de não ter chegado a ser memorável. O som continua a ser bom - uma das músicas novas que apresentaram soa aos primeiros anos da banda - mas a energia não foi a mesma.
Incubus, os veteranos
Apesar das críticas, pareceu-me um dos melhores concertos da noite. Não pela set list ou pelo espectáculo em si, mas pela adesão das primeiras filas, onde os fãs da banda que foram ao Meco de propósito para a ver vibraram do início ao fim. Muito por incentivo do vocalista Brandon Boyd, um foco de energia (e estilo). Sim, havia ali muito de Red Hot Chili Peppers; sim, foi um mix complicado das músicas da banda. Mas nem por isso foi mau. (Imagino apenas o que a banda terá comentado ao ver-se a actuar para um recinto meio cheio.)

The line-up was promising a great festival and so were the weather and the venue of the 18th Super Bock Super Rock, which took place from 5th to 7th July, at Meco, Lisbon. Despite the high expectations, the shows failed to be memorable and the venue was far from sold out. On the first day of the fest, Alabama Shakes (who weren't even playing at the main stage) were kings.
According to numbers released by the organisation there were 18 thousand people at Meco, on July 5th, a turnout that would be pretty similar on the following days. Some shows were disappointing, other were surprisingly good and yet others were happening at the same time in different points making it impossible for the crowd to fully experience everything their money bought. Fundamentally, the first day was marked by a young spirit, quite young actually, and a less indie vibe than it was expected. Hot Chip played far too late for a kick off day, especially being Thursday. Here's something about some of the shows.
Salto
In Portuguese, Salto means to jump or a jump. Well, that was precisely was these guys from Porto did at SBSR. They are quite a young band, with little experience, and have a short repertoire. That being said, they did really good considering they were called out last minute after Pete Doherty cancel his performance to go into rehab. Not many people were at in front of the stage but those who were, certainly, came out delighted with Salto's act. The band released their first album on July 2nd, with the same name.
The Happy Mess, a happy surprise
Surprised by: 1) they're Portuguese and I hadn't heard of them; 2) they play an old rock vibe; and 3) their frontman, Miguel Ribeiro, is a journalist at the TV station SIC Notícias. Nice show.
Capitão Fausto and their instrumental music
They have the experience that Salto were lacking. They put on a great show, full of music instead of songs - that's how they do it. They were the first ones to bring the party to the fest and to make people dance to their most recognised singles. But the crowd migrated to the secondary stage on the second part of the show. Two reasons, I see: they went to see Alabama Shakes and they lost interest in the psychedelic delirium of Capitão Fausto's instrumental music, less likely to please a festival atmosphere.
From Alabama with love
Alabama Shakes turned Palco EDP stage into the main stage for the night. The Southern band had quite a turnout on their first time in Portugal, presenting their debut album Boys & Girls. Brittany Howard is an amazing vocalist and she adds soul to the rock-ish vibe of the band. With such a success I expect them to be back soon.
Bloc Party with no party
I would like to have seen Bloc Party from the 'Banquet' era. And I think the crowd would to, judging by their reaction to the first chords of this hit. Only from that moment the band warmed up, though failing to present an energetic show. The still sound good but something was missing.
Incubus, the veterans
They were criticised by the set list they brought. But for me it was one of the best shows of the night. Not for the set list and not for the show, but by the reaction of the fans piled up in the front rows. Brandon Boyd is an excellent host, a ball of energy. Yes, there was something of a Red Hot Chili Peppers inspiration, inside a complex mix of the band's songs. But that didn't turn out on a band show. (I can only imagine what the band must have said facing such an empty venue.)
