Bon Iver's top songs before the show

Countdown is on.

Next Twesday I'll be watching Bon Iver live for the first time and I couldn't be more excited. I've been getting ready for the show by going through the project's discography.

Here is a top of my favourite Bon Iver songs, though it's nearly impossible to like some more than others.

#5 - 'Stacks'

Justin Vernon described 'Stacks' as his most personal song, saying that the lyrics marked a turn in his musical path. The track belongs to For Emma, Forever Ago, the debut album of Bon Iver.

#4 - 'Towers'

When I first heard Bon Iver, Bon Iver, the second album, I thought it sounded quite different from Emma. The songs had more instruments in it, they sounded fuller. I guess they weren't as simple and plain as the first record's tracks. Then I started to listen to them more and more and it made sense - Bon Iver grew from the first album to this one and the sound followed that evolution. 'Towers' is absolutely beautiful and it has a matching video.

#3 - 'Holocene'

This song won two Grammys this year but Justin Vernon doesn't care much about that. Fame, recognition and awards mean little to the Wisconsin musician. He cares about people listening to the songs, sending messages through the lyrics, producing good music and doing is thing.

#2 - 'Flume'

I think 'Flume' was one of the first things I've ever heard of Bon Iver. I remember going through the lyrics to fully understand the song. I learnt that Bon Iver songs are to be felt, not understood word by word.

Já estou em preparação para ver Bon Iver, pela primeira vez, ao vivo. É na próxima terça-feira e parece que o tempo nunca mais passa.

Para encurtar a espera, tenho andado a rever a discografia do projecto. Por isso, aqui fica um top de músicas preferidas de Bon Iver, embora seja praticamente impossível pôr umas acima das outras.

#5 - 'Stacks'

O Justin Vernon descreveu 'Stacks' como a sua música mais pessoal, dado que a letra marca uma viragem no seu percurso musical e na sua vida. A faixa está incluída no álbum de estreia, For Emma, Forever Ago.

#4 - 'Towers'

Quando ouvi pela primeira vez o segundo álbum - expectativas lá em cima - soou-me a algo estranho, diferente do Emma. As músicas eram mais cheias de instrumentos, menos simples, nuas e directas. Mas depois fez sentidoo. Bon Iver foi crescendo como acontecimento e isso permitiu à sua música acompanhar essa evolução. 'Towers' é simplesmente linda e tem um vídeo que não lhe fica atrás.

#3 - 'Holocene'

Esta música venceu dois prémios Grammy. Mas a fama, o reconhecimento e os prémios não interessam muito a Justin Vernon. O músico do Wisconsin preocupa-se mais em mostrar a sua música às pessoas, em transmitir-lhes as suas mensagens e em fazer boa música, à sua maneira.

#2 - 'Flume'

Acho que 'Flume' deve ter sido das primeiras coisas que ouvi de Bon Iver. Lembro-me que olhar para a letra com atenção para compreender todo o seu significado. Aprendi que a música de Bon Iver é para ser sentida, não interpretada.

Grammys review: Maroon 5, Foster The People, Beach Boys

It seems to me that the Grammys folks tossed on the table the names of the bands they wanted to have on stage this year. They paired them up and there were only three names left: Maroon 5, Foster The People and the Beach Boys. And a tribute to the Boys was invented.

Although they might have some common ground - more Foster The People and the Beach Boys anyway - the hole combination just didn't work. First Maroon 5 calmly performed 'Surfer Girl'; Foster The People came in singing 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' and looked like they were so uncomfortable at the Grammys stage. Afterwards, the veterans of the Beach Boys showed that they are oldies but goldies with 'Good Vibrations'.

Even though the three bands came together for the last song, it looked like a karaoke night with new singers coming up on stage right after the previous ones set foot at the backstage.

Cá para mim, o pessoal dos Grammys atirou para cima da mesa os nomes das bandas que queriam ter no palco. Juntaram alguns e no fim só sobraram três: Maroon 5, Foster The People e Beach Boys. E estava criado um tributo aos Beach Boys.

Apesar de terem algumas semelhanças - mais os Foster The People e os Beach Boys - a combinação não resultou. Primeiro vieram os Maroon 5 tocar com muita moderação a música Surfer Girl. Seguiram-se os Foster The People com Wouldn't It Be Nice, que tocaram com um ar tão desconfortável que deu dó. Lá apareceram os veteranos Beach Boys a mostrar que são uns velhinhos com estilo com Good Vibrations.

Ainda que se tenham juntado no final as três bandas, a actuação pareceu uma noite de karaoke com cantores novos a subir ao palco assim que os anteriores punham um pé no backstage.

Grammys review: in memory of

There were some nice tributes at the Grammys. This year's list of late music personalities was unfortunately quite long.

Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt combined their voices in a beautiful tribute to Etta James.

Jennifer Hudson sang 'I Will Always Love You'  in honor of Whitney Houston. Lots of artists were talking about the sad news of her death.

Este ano os Grammys tiveram homenagens bonitas. A lista de personalidades da música que morreram era bastante longa.

Alicia Keys e Bonnie Raitt juntaram as suas vozes num bonito momento para recordar Etta James.

A Jennifer Hudson cantou I Will Always Love You em homenagem a Whitney Houston. Muitos artistas falaram da triste notícia da sua morte.

Grammys review: Foo Fighters play rock from the heart

With an amazing performance, Foo Fighters proved once more (like there were any doubts) that they are one of the greatest rock bands of our time. They always seem to have the best time and they also give the crowd the best time while performing.

On one of their acceptance speeches, Dave Grohl reminded everybody that making music is about what's in the heart, not about what's in the mind. He said that singing to a microphone and learning to play an instrument were the important things in making music.

This year, Foo Fighters took the Grammys for Rock Song ('Walk'), Rock Album, Rock Performance and Hard Rock/Metal Performance.

I particularly liked their collab with Deadmau5. It should have ended the ceremony, in a party mood.

Com uma actuação brilhantes, os Foo Fighters provaram mais uma vez (se dúvidas houvesse) que são uma das maiores bandas de rock dos nossos tempos. Parecem sempre estar a divertir-se e divertem o público nas suas actuações.

Num dos seus discursos de agradecimento, Dave Grohl relembrou a toda a gente que fazer música tem mais a ver com o que vai no coração do que na cabeça. Disse ainda que cantar ao microfone a aprender a tocar um instrumento são as coisas importantes nisto da música.

Este ano, os Foo Fighters levaram para casa os Grammys de Música Rock, Álbum Rock, Actuação Rock e Actuação Hard Rock/Metal.

Gostei particularmente na colaboração com Deadmau5. Acho que devia ter sido o encerramento da cerimónia, num bom ambiente de festa.

Grammys review: Bruno Mars deserved something

The most unfair decision of the night was not giving one single Grammy to Bruno Mars. Doo-Wops & Hooligans is such a well produced album. Regardless the style of his music, it is good music.

If one listens to the album it from the first to the last song, there is so much more than 'Billionaire' and 'Grenade'. Bruno Mars is a really good musician who brought his own style into the business. He reminds me of how Amy Winehouse opened the way for artists such as Duffy and even Adele.

Its a shame that he hasn't got one of the six Grammys he was nominated for:Record of the Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album and Producer Of The Year (along with the talented Philip Lawrence, they are The Smeezingtons).

 

The good news is that Bruno Mars is preparing is second album.

A decisão mais injusta da noite foi a de não atribuir a Bruno Mars um único Grammy. Doo-Wops & Hooligans é um álbum tão bem produzido... Independentemente do estilo da sua música, ele faz boa música.

Basta ouvir o seu álbum de estreia de uma ponta à outra para perceber que há muito mais para além de Billionaire e Grenade. Bruno Mars é um bom músico, que trouxe o seu próprio estilo ao mercado. Faz-me lembrar como Amy Winehouse abriu caminho para artistas como Duffy e até Adele.

É realmente uma pena que ele não tenha recebido nenhum dos seis prémios para os quais estava nomeado: Gravação do Ano, Álbum do Ano, Canção do Ano, Melhor Performance Pop, Melhor Álbum Pop e Produtor do Ano (Bruno Mars faz parte dos The Smeezingtons, com o também talentoso Philip Lawrence).

A boa notícia é que Bruno Mars está já a preparar o segundo álbum.

Grammys review: Lady Gaga 0 - Adele wins it all

Gaga was up for Album Of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. But all these Grammys went to Adele, who swept all the categories she was nominated for.

The British pop sensation also received Record Of The Year, Best Short Form Music Video and Song Of The Year with 'Rolling In The Deep'.

Risking some life threats, I must say I didn't like seeing Adele at the Grammys in general. I certainly don't think her performance was the best of night. Although she had a good comeback, you could tell her voice is still not the same as before all the health issues.

But what really annoyed me was when she went on stage for the last time. It reminded me of Lady Gaga's overreaction at 2011 MTV EMAs.

Lady Gaga estava nomeada para Álbum do Ano, Melhor Performance Pop a Solo e Melhor Álbum Pop. Mas todas estas estatuetas foram para Adele, que limpou as categorias todas para as quais estava nomeada.

A sensação da pop britânica ainda recebeu os prémios de Gravação do Ano, Melhor Vídeo e Canção do Ano, com Rolling In The Deep.

Arriscando-me a receber ameaças de morte, tenho a dizer que, no geral, não gostei muito de ver a Adele nos Grammys. Acho que a sua actuação não foi a melhor da noite. Apesar de ter feito um regresso notável, percebia-se que a voz ainda não está ao nível de antes dos problemas de saúde.

Mas do que me gostei menos foi quando Adele subiu ao palco pela última vez. Fez-me lembrar a reacção forçada de Lady Gaga nos MTV EMA's 2011.

Grammys review: do people really not know Bon Iver?

So much for not caring about the Grammys, right Justin Vernon? The frontman for Bon Iver actually showed up at the ceremony, which he criticised, to receive the awards for New Artist and Alternative Album (Bon Iver). It was fair. You got these ones right, Academy.

Now, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the fact that people who follow the music scene and like to watch the Grammys must, at least, have gone through the nominees list before the big night. Just by doing so, people would at least know that Bon Iver is not spelled Bonny Bear. But many many people were twitting and commenting about who Justin Vernon and Bon Iver were. There is even a hilarious Tumblr page gathering those thoughts. Oh Lord, the ignorance...

Here are some favourites.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if these people only knew Kanye as the guy who interrupts award acceptance speeches.

 

And then there is the Bonny Bear variation.

I actually gotta give some credit to this one. I thought Justin Vernon could have gotten a suit made in this century.

Lá se vai o não ligar nenhuma aos Grammys, hã Justin Vernon? O frontman de Bon Iver acabou por aparecer na cerimónia, que tanto criticou, para aceitar os galardões de Artista Revelação e Álbum Alternativo (Bon Iver). Foi justo. Acertaste nestes dois, Academia.

Agora, um momento de reflexão sobre o facto de as pessoas que seguem o mundo da música e que gostam de ver os Grammys terem a preocupação de, pelo menos, ler a lista de nomeados antes da grande noite. Só por isso já saberiam que Bon Iver não se escreve Bonny Bear. Ao que parece, muitas pessoas twittaram e comentaram ontem perguntando quem são Justin Vernon e Bon Iver. Até foi criada uma hilariante página de Tumblr que junta esses comentários. Tanta ignorância...

Acima estão algumas das minhas preferidas. Sobre a primeira, não surpreenderia nada que esta gente só conhecesse o Kanye como aquele tipo que interrompe os discursos de agradecimento dos prémios. A segunda foi repetida inúmeras vezes noite adentro, com muito boa gente a ouvir Bonny Bear em vez de Bon Iver. Esta última até tem alguma razão: eu achei que o Justin Vernon podia ao menos ter arranjado uma fatiota feita neste século.

Bruno Mars' performance at the Grammys

Although he and is band were amazing as always, I was expecting more out of Bruno Mars' performance. They have performed 'Runaway Baby' quite sometimes now.

It's a great song for the Grammys, since it allows them to put up a big show, with lots of lights, and to go for the inner James Brown to bring out those awesome moves. But it's kind of "been there, done that".

Nevertheless, it's always a pleasure to listen to Bruno Mars.

Apesar de terem estado excelentes como sempre, estava à espera de mais qualquer coisa da actuação do Bruno Mars e da sua banda nos Grammys. Já tocaram a Runaway Baby algumas vezes.

É uma música brutal para os Grammys, porque permite dar um bom espectáculo, com montes de luzes, e ir buscar o James Brown que está em cada um deles para fazer aqueles moves fantásticos. Mas já está muito visto.

Ainda assim, é sempre um prazer ouvi-los.

Grammys update: the performers II

Nominees Coldplay and Rihanna will be performing at the Grammys stage, the singer confirmed in her Twitter. They will present Mylo Xyloto's collaboration of 'Princess of China'.

Sir Paul McCartney also joins the list of performers. In his long career he has won 14 Grammy awards!

This year's host will be two-time Grammy winner LL Cool J.

Os nomeados Coldplay e Rihanna vão juntar-se no palco dos Grammys, para apresentar a colaboração que faz parte do último álbum dos britânicos - Princess of China.

Sir Paul McCartney também engrossa a lista dos artistas que vão actuar nos prémios. Ao longo da sua carreira, Paul McCartney já recebeu 14 Grammys!

O apresentador deste ano será o vencedor de dois Grammys, LL Cool J.

Grammys update: the performers

Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, and Taylor Swift will be performing  February 12th at the Grammys stage. While they are all nominated for awards, only Jason Aldean and Nicki Minaj are debuting as Grammy performers.

The 54th Grammys, coming up

The biggest music ceremony of the year is coming up. I'm guessing Adele and Bon Iver will sweep the awards, on February 12th.
