Happy World Music Day

On this World Music Day, I decided to share with you some of my special songs. The ones I always go back to. The ones I can sing along to every and each word. The songs that remind me of amazing moments, beautiful concerts and great people. Because that's what music is all about - memories.

'Vidas Ligadas' by Klepht
OK, this is a crappy, crappy video. But you have to watch it in order to love this song by the Portuguese band, Klepht. This is from a show the group played back in 2004. It would be just another performance of this beautifully written song if it wasn't for Pacman (the leader of one of my all-time favourite bands, Da Weasel) coming on stage at the very end to sing one of the most powerful verses I know: "Tens de aguentar sempre pancadas sem fugir/ Sexo, drogas, rock 'n roll, sempre a partir/ Esta mistura é mesmo um quadro mal pintado/ Se Deus existe, podes crer que fez o mundo ressacado".

'Skinny Love' by Bon Iver
I guess I don't have to explain this one since it's probably a favourite of many too. I'll just add how magic it was to listen to the first few chords of 'Skinny Love' on Justin Vernon's guitar, last year in Lisbon. The crowd went nuts and I have goosebumps and tears on my eyes by thinking about that moment right now.

'Dream a Little Dream' by Louis Armstrong
Search no more, this is the best version of 'Dream a Little Dream' you could ever find. Louis Armstrong had an amazing voice and a heartwarming look on his face. Isn't it marvellous how he always looked so happy and glad to be alive?

'Barbarella e Barba Rala' by Samuel Úria
If you're not sick of hearing me talking about Samuel Úria's immense talent, please take another listen to this song for it's one of the best Portuguese poems turned into music of the past years.

'Hurt' by Johnny Cash
This song is pure pain and raw emotions. Johnny Cash's voice already makes you get to the bottom of things, where it really "hurts", but these lyrics go beyond that...

'Kiss of Life' by Friendly Fires
Wrapping up in a much brighter tone, this list would not be complete without Friendly Fires. I dare you to stay still to 'Kiss of Life', it is physically impossible. That's what happened to me last year, at Super Bock Super Rock fest, in Meco, when the band came up on stage. Their music it's practically a shot of energy. I mention it here because the best songs aren't always the ones for the sad moments. A good tune makes you feel something. Even if it's a crazy urge to dance.

Para celebrar o Dia Mundial da Música, trago-vos algumas das minhas favoritas. São aquelas músicas a que regresso sempre e tantas vezes, pelas memórias que trazem consigo. Porque a música é isso mesmo - memórias.

Klepht em concerto, com Da Weasel e Michael Knight

No Sábado, fui conhecer o espaço Estádio Geração C, que a Câmara de Cascais preparou para acompanhar o Europeu com a transmissão dos jogos e muitos concertos.

Actuaram os Klepht, que já tinha visto há algum tempo. É sempre bom vê-los, nem que seja só para ouvir esta música (que não estava nada à espera que tocassem num concerto curtinho, num palco pequeno e para uma audiência modesta).

Adoro (embora volte sempre à versão com o Pac - qualidade muito manhosa, eu sei).

Foram uns Klepht um bocado desfalcados em relação à formação original da banda, que fizeram uma pausa na gravação do terceiro álbum para dar este concerto. Pareceu que se divertiram tanto quanto o público, que contou com a presença de amigos da banda - o suficiente para tornar um pequeno concerto especial. E isso passou para os outros espectadores.

Surpresa foi o nível etário médio do público (alguém me diz se os Klepht fazem parte da banda sonora dos Morangos com Açúcar?). É engraçado ver gente tão nova a cantar de cor as músicas do álbum Hipocondria, que veio consagrar o facto de os Klepht serem uma grande banda portuguesa, ainda que o público só os conheça há poucos anos.

Um concerto que até foi buscar o jingle d'O Justiceiro e o clássico 'Tás na boa' de Da Weasel acabou em jeito de discos pedidos num encore aclamado.

Do público, alguém pede 'Hipocondria' e dá a piada e o mote para um encerramento em grande. Novamente, as vozes acompanham a letra da música e mostram que não querem ver chegar ao fim o concerto dos Klepht que, num concerto curtinho, num palco pequeno e para uma audiência modesta, deram um bom espectáculo.

Klepht is another one of those bands that make it worth learning to speak Portuguese just to listen to their songs. Last Saturday I had the chance to watch Klepht perform again and, as I expected, it was a very good show.

What I didn't expect was that they included 'Vidas Ligadas' (take a listen at the video above) in the set list, since it is one of the band's oldest (and best) songs and the show was set to be a small one. And they have so many recent singles that everybody sings along to... A good surprise.

Klepht took some time from recording their third album and performed in Carcavelos, Lisbon, at an event of celebration of the European Football Championship. Though some original members have left the band I'm excited to hear the new material.

For their second album, 'Hipocondria', they save up some money and flew to California without the support of a recording company just to be able to do what they had envisioned. That's commitment and believing in themselves as a band.

It paid off and the proof is that everybody in the audience on Saturday knew the lyrics to the songs.

Música e futebol

Parece que há futebol em Junho. Como é que eu sei isto? Há música metida ao barulho e não é daquelas maratonas pimba da TVI. É boa música, numa mega festa de apoio à Selecção Nacional.

É no Pavilhão Desportivo dos Lombos, em Carcavelos. Começa a 1 de Junho, há transmissão dos jogos em directo, karaoke e muita música. O melhor - a entrada é livre. Os concertos começam às 22h e são estes:

Apparently there is going to be some sort of football championship next month. How do I know it? There is music in it.

Starting June 1st, Cascais will be hosting a music fest to support the Portuguese national team. And a good one.

It's at the Lombos Sport Pavilion, in Carcavelos. Games will be broadcasted live and there is also karaoke. The best part - it's free. Check the line up above to see who's performing. Shows start at 22h. Do not miss this!

Vem aí o festU

É a 16 e 17 de Março que acontece na FIL o primeiro festival nacional do estudante, o festU.

No primeiro dia, o cabeça de cartaz é Boss AC (estou convencida de que há gente que passa toda a semana à espera que seja sexta-feira para partilhar no Facebook a música nova de AC.

Actuam ainda os inevitáveis Homens da Luta. Onde houver um ajuntamento considerável de povo, é certo que se encontra lá os Homens da Luta. Ele é manifestações, feiras, festivais... Correm tudo.

O alinhamento conta ainda com Mónica Ferraz (vocalista dos Mesa), Macacos do Chinês e DJ Yes We Groove.

Ao segundo dia, ouve-se Diego Miranda (com Ana Free), Tara Perdida, Agir, Klepht, Rosinha e HMB.

Festival universitário que se preze tem de ter tunas (e o Quim Barreiros), que aqui actuam a seguir a bandas de  garagem. Pergunta: as bandas de garagem não têm nome?

As entradas estão a ser vendidas a 13€ para um dia e a 23€ para os dois dias, preços que se mantêm só até 15 de Março. Os bilhetes estão disponíveis nas associações de estudantes e na Ticketline.

festU, the first Portuguese national student festival, will take place in March 16th and 17th at FIL (Feira Internacional de Lisboa).

 

Performing artists for the first day are Boss AC, Homens da Luta, Mónica Ferraz, Macacos do Chinês and DJ Yes We Groove.

On the second day, the line-up includes Diego Miranda (with Ana Free), Tara Perdida, Agir, Klepht, Rosinha and HMB.

Both days will be opening with the performances of garage bands and university tunas.

 

Entries cost 13€ a day, and 23€ for the two days, but only till March 15th. Tickets can be purchased at the academic councils and in Ticketline.
