Gotye, o homem que pôs toda a gente a cantar desgostos de amor com 'Somebody That I Used To Know' vai estar em Portugal.

"To all y’all long-time listeners, the guys in the band and I are working on a bunch of older songs for upcoming shows- lots of folks were asking for tracks from Boardface and Like Drawing Blood that we haven’t played live before. It’s gonna be fab to extend the show and play some different things for you, and share for the first time some new visuals from some amazing animators I’ve been lucky to work with recently."

O melhor - a entrada é livre.

--

Os Capitães da Areia are a Portuguese band who just released the video for their second single. The song is called 'Raparigas da Minha Idade' and it's taken from their first album, O Verão Eterno d’Os Capitães da Areia.

It's Portuguese pop with a Summer vibe.

--
The best thing about radio is its capability of surprising who's listening to it. It's amazing when your favourite song comes on as you turn up the radio, right?

My morning started very well today, because it started with these songs.

Remembering Donna Summers

It's sad to see another icon go. Specially given that she was still young and that cancer is to blame for her death. Here is Donna Summer, singing the hit 'Love To Love You Baby'.

Fica aqui Donna Summers a cantar o hit 'Love To Love You Baby'.

'Beware of the Boys'

I dare anyone to stay still while listening to this song. I first heard it on 90210 last season and now The Dictator brought it back by playing it in the trailer. Isn't it catchy?

Have a great week.

--

Aqui fica o alinhamento: 1. Os Maridos das Outras | 2. Reader’s Digest | 3. Matérias do Coração | 4. O Capitão Fantástico | 5. Desdita | 6. Autopsicodiagnose | 7. Fizz Limão | 8. Canção do Ciclo Preparatório | 9. Rosa da Minha Rua | 10. Baile dos Sem-Ninguém | 11. Sete Passos (Carolina)

--
A record was made in only five days and a half. That is the reason why Miguel Araújo Jorge called his first solo album five and a half days, or in the original Portuguese, Cinco Dias e Meio.

‘Os Maridos das Outras’ is the controverse first single of Miguel’s album. The musician has been part of many projects (he also goes by the names Miguel AJ and Mendes) and now he presents himself to the Portuguese music scene.

Out on May 21st, this is an instrospective album, calmer with a ballad vibe to it. That’s how the musician described his new record to Urban Blues. But, given the first single, which is bubbly and funny, though ironic too, we would expect a record much more alike this side of Miguel that we already know by his presence in projects like Os Azeitonas and Mendes e João Só.

We would be mistaken then. The other songs give the record a darker, sadder, tone. These were songs that Miguel had in his back pocket for some years and that he brought back when the opportunity to make his own record came along.

Miguel has been having a good year. After collaborating with humorist Nuno Markl in a live show that supposedly taught the audience how to draw women, bikes and horses (that was the title), his song ‘Os Maridos das Outras’ has not left the Portuguese tops and national radios.

But why five and a half days? The point was to present a raw album, as if the songs have no studio treatment or post production. Miguel recorded the guitars and vocals and afterwards added some drumms.

Cinco Dias e Meio is on pre-sale at iTunes here. Besides the 11 songs of the standard version of the album, there is a special edition available with an extra DVD with 11 videos and comments on each song. Check the line-up of the album above.

The new album is being prepared since 2008 and will finally be released on September 25th, the band has announced..

Will they still sound like No Doubt? Let's hope so. Here is something to remember the old days of the band.

Choveu. Cancelaram Linda Martini em cima do acontecimento.

Cheguei tarde e já não vi Vengaboys.

É tudo.

It rained cats and dogs. Linda Martini were cancelled on the last minute.

I was so late I lost the Vengaboys' show.

That's all.

Train songs: Ed Sheeran

When I was choosing the name of this blog, one of the possibilities I had in mind was something like Train Songs. This relates to the fact that I really enjoy going on my almost daily train ride of hald an hour while listening to something good.

This week, my Train Songs selections were all about this guy. I'm in love with Ed Sheeran's voice. Here are some of his performances at BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. Enjoy.

--

Adoro a voz do Ed Sheeran.

--

Rain or shine, there is one thing that pulls a hardworking student out of the books, and that's the Academic Week or, in Portuguese, Semana Académica. This year's Lisbon Academic Week has one day left but it didn't start in the best way.

On May 2nd, the line-up included the group of students Estudantina Universitária de Lisboa, the Fado singer Carminho in a special collaboration with DJ Ride and Os Azeitonas.

The Estudantina Universitária de Lisboa made a brief stop by the stage but started the party, in such a cold night. With a late start - very late - and a  rainy night, the fest was expected to be a big fail. External matters determined that the shows should end by 1h instead of the announced 2h.

Carminho came up next, but without DJ Ride. The singer puts on a good performance and brings along the phenomenal musicians. Her voice is so powerful that it filled up the half empty venue.

Os Azeitonas were a good surprise. They bring a big ensemble and put on stage a huge, carefully thought scenario. The show made worth the long wait for the Portuguese band. They are amazing on stage with a great energy, specially considering it was a festival prepared for students. The start out with a radio jingle and set the mood of a live music club. The songs sound pretty much like the studio versions, with the additional feeling of live performances.

In 45 minutes, Os Azeitonas presented their most known songs in a best of that the crowd sang along.

Frontman Mário Brandão (goes for Marlon also) is the centre of attention with his bursting energy. A real master of ceremonies. He talked to the people, asked for them to sing along and improvised some robot tunes in the middle of one of the band's hits, 'Quem és tu, Miúda?'.

The most anticipated song of the night was 'Anda Comigo Ver os Aviões', the song presented by a candidate of the Portuguese version of Idol which went viral in Portugal. It was mesmerizing to watch everybody follow  the lyrics of this beautiful ballad, that made success to the band back in 2010. Actually, Os Azeitonas were kind of out of the music scene until the Idol episode. It surely made the day for the organization of the fest to book this band, even though they ended up cutting the show from 1h15 minutes to only 45 minutes.

The band told Urban Blues they could and wanted to comeback to the stage for an encore as the crowd was asking.

DJ Ride closed up with just 30 minutes of performance and the collaboration with Carminho didn't really happen.

Remembering Adam Yauch and the Beastie Boys

It's such a shame to keep losing so many amazing people to cancer. Adam Yauch marked a generation (or two) along with the Beastie Boys.

Here is probably their most known song. A real anthom.

--

“Eu achei piada àquilo e transcrevi a frase”.

Os Pontos Negros are back with a new album, recorded at Abbey Road studios. It's a bit more judgmental than the previous works of the band but it still sounds like them. They were invited to record new music by the website Optimus Discos - where one can download for free good recent Portuguese albums - which they presented at Fnac Chiado. Afterwards, Os Pontos Negros talked to the Urban Blues about Soba Lobi.
Preparing for the big stages surely coming in the summer, Os Pontos Negros played almost all the new songs. The crowd followed the songs and surprisingly sang along the lyrics of Soba Lobi, the record released only about a week ago, proving the band's return was much anticipated.
"This record is less romantic and a little more disappointed", says the man in command of the keyboards, Silas Ferreira. There are some songs that set a critic view that the album portrays. It is also a louder record, with fast and hard lyrics and messages.
"Among our records this is the one that sounds the best". Filipe Sousa (vocals and guitar) states what his fellow band members agree on. The four boys packed went to London for 3 days to make the record at the legendary Abbey Road studios. It's needless to talk about Abbey Road, but let's just remember that the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead and Depeche Mode, among many others, played there.
(I wonder if there is a picture of the boys crossing the most famous street in the music history, Beatles style.)
"The Abbey Road factor gives the album more mystique", thinks Jónatas Pires (vocals and guitar).

A special invitation comes along just in time
Henrique Amaro is the man in charge of the collaboration between the band and Optimus Discos. When he presented the opportunity to the band, they were already planning a third album. Also, they were thinking about sharing their music online for free too, so the invitation couldn't have come in a better timing. Silas explains that it would have been a lot harder to do so without Optimus Discos "which is a structure that people already know".
The band is not anticipating much buzz about the album, by the fact that are not fresh news into the Portuguese music scene. They are together for some years now and have quite a solid fan base, which was crystal clear by how well the crowd at Fnac Chiado knew the lyrics to Soba Lobi. The band has reached a stage where they want "to do whatever we want regardless there are only 50 or 2000 people watching".
They were one of the first bands in this new Portuguese modern pop rock music, releasing their first album in 2008 (Magnífico Material Inútil) and in 2010 the second and most successful record till now (Pequeno-Almoço Continental). Along the way they have worked with the record labels FlorCaveira and Universal.
Despite that, when they were just starting out they received some positive and negative feedback and there were "lots of people who liked us and lots of people who hated us", says Silas. Their fresh and cheerful pop was understood "too simple" by some and "too corny" by others" considering it even "too arrogant".
Soba Lobi was released a week ago and it is playing the national radios and iPods, considering how many fans were at the showcase at Fnac Chiado

What's this Soba Lobi thing?
The title for this record came along during a studio practice. David Pires (drums) was working on a new song "and Filipe was just humming the syllables of what would be the lyrics". "I thought it was funny and wrote down the sentence", he says. Soba Lobi stuck as a joke during the making of the album until Tiago de Sousa (sound technician) suggested it as the title.
They found out that "Soba" has some curious meanings". In some African villages, it refers to the chief. Silas points out that they wanted "to tease people with that idea that we own something", which is a "presumptuous idea".
In Japanese it means a kind of noodle.
Soba Lobi is available for free and legal download at optimus.blitz.pt/discos. For those who prefer the hard copy, there are 500 being sold by €4.99.
Here is the first single, 'Tudo Floresce'.
